This 1-hour ZOOM presentation by Colin Beaumont will be of benefit to anyone involved in advising clients at the police station stage who are under investigation for really serious offences.

8 – The ‘no comment’ interview and the prepared statement read out during the interview or read out at the charging stage

9 – The importance not only of Section 34 but also of Sections 36 (objects substances or marks) and Section 37 (arrested at or near the scene of the crime) of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994

10 – The issue of consent – the definition of consent within the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and what the Court of Appeal had to say in the interesting case of Lawrance

11 – Something nasty tucked away in Section 47 (2) and (7) of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 – do you know what it is?

12 – The seizure of your client’s clothes and forensics

13 – The refusal of bail by the police

14 – Serious Offences whereby the serious offence rates may be claimed by someone having the status of a Duty Solicitor – an examination of the 2022 Standard Crime Contract Specification document

15 – Attacking the character of the deceased – bad character considerations under the Criminal Justice Act 2003

16 – The client who wants to talk in order to lessen his/her involvement in all of this

17 –  Clients whom the police want to interview and you know it is merely a ‘fishing exercise’

18 – Advice to give to the client who is being detained overnight as the police propose further interviews the following day

19 – Important points to get across in your confidential pre-interview consultation with the client

20 – Don’t forget the custody record and your right to read the record upon arrival at the station and throughout your client’s detention there – important things may be being added to the record during your visit
